Why Lithium-Ion Battery Fires Can Become Dangerous So Quickly
Lithium-ion batteries can cause fast-moving fires and explosions because they store a large amount of energy in a small space. If a battery cell is damaged, overheated, overcharged, or defective, it can enter a process called thermal runaway. The U.S. Fire Administration explains that thermal runaway is an uncontrolled rise in temperature that can cause a battery to ignite, explode, or spread fire to nearby cells.
A failing lithium-ion battery can also release flammable gases and reignite after the visible fire has been extinguished. In an apartment building, that can create an especially dangerous situation because fire and smoke can spread quickly while residents are trying to escape.
