No Texting Pledge for Family Drivers Could Save Lives

“Have the drivers in your family sign a ‘No Texting Pledge’,” urges Eric Hageman, an attorney with our law firm who represents accident victims and their families nationwide.  You can contact Eric for a free consultation here.

“Having clients injured in crashes caused by texting, we wanted to do something to help prevent these accidents,” explains Eric. Parents can use a no texting pledge to help make sure their family’s drivers drive safely. No text is important enough to risk the life of someone on the road.

Distracted driving has become the number one cause of accidents, and texting while driving is by far the most dangerous distraction because it requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver. According to the U.S. DOT, “text messaging creates a crash risk 23 times worse than driving while not distracted. Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent-at 55 mph-of driving the length of an entire football field, blind.”

Eric, the father of five children, knows firsthand the positive impact parents can have when they lead by example. He encourages parents to take the pledge with their children and to pull over when they need to text. He also encourages parents to make it clear to children that just a few seconds of distracted driving can result in serious injury or death.

If you are a parent of a teen that you can’t trust to drive without texting, you may want to have your teen leave his or her phone at home while driving. Another option is to disable text messaging on your child’s phone.
