Hostess Recalls Hamburger, Hot Dog Buns for Salmonella, Listeria

Hostess hamburger and hot dog buns are being recalled for risk of Salmonella and Listeria contamination. The Hostess hamburger and hot dog bun recall includes products made for Hostess by Best Harvest Bakeries of Lenexa, KS. These items were distributed nationwide to grocery stores and convenience stores.

At the time of the recall, the company was unaware of any illnesses associated with these products. However, consumers who have purchased them should not eat them as Salmonella and Listeria can cause serious illness. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.

Best Harvest Bakeries discovered the potential problem through its environmental monitoring program. Because Best Harvest only manufactures certain Hostess hamburger buns and hot dog buns, not other Hostess products are included in this recall.

Symptoms of Infection

Symptoms of a Listeria monocytogenes infection usually develop within two weeks of eating the contaminated food, but sometimes can take as long as 70 days to develop. They include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, other muscle stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Even if a pregnant woman experiences only mild symptoms, these infections can cause miscarriage, stillbirths, or premature delivery of an infected newborn.

Salmonella symptoms usually develop six to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. They include fever,  nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. For some people, these infections will travel from the intestinal tract to the bloodstream producing more severe illnesses. Generally, these infections require treatment at a hospital.
