The accident happened about 4:38 p.m. on Highway 63. A Chevrolet Impala was going northbound, when it collided with a semi truck going south near milepost 6.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 57-year-old Rochel Buck of Cresco, Iowa, was killed. She leaves behind a husband, two daughters, and four grandchildren. The semi driver was not injured. The semitrailer kept going for a short distance after the collision and stopped on the shoulder. The roadway was wet at the time, and the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) is investigating the accident.

Wet Roads and Truck Driver Responsibility

Drivers of semitrailer trucks have the duty to drive with extra care, particularly when road conditions are not optimum. When roads are wet, this may mean driving slower than the posted speed limit because 18-wheelers can hydroplane.

“The vast majority of most weather-related crashes happen on wet pavement and during rainfall: 73% on wet pavement and 46% during rainfall,” according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. This tragic crash is a reminder to drivers of big rigs to slow down when the road is wet.
