Minnesota Woman Dies in Semi Crash in Wisconsin

A 41-year-old Minnesota woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Wisconsin on Saturday, January 9, 2016. The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. on westbound I-94 near Hixon, which is southeast of Eau Claire.

A 2012 Volvo semi-truck owned by a company in Wisconsin collided with the 1995 Buick four-door car. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was not injured.

Both vehicles were traveling west when the accident occurred. The Wisconsin state patrol is investigating the fatal accident.

About 10% of all highway deaths take place when a semi truck or large truck crashes with a passenger vehicle. Trucks can weigh 30 times as much as passenger cars and take a much longer time to stop. And since cars are much smaller than commercial vehicles, the sheer weight difference can be the deciding factor in severity of injuries or wrongful death.

There are usually several factors involved in these accidents that your lawyer will investigate.

Accidents involving semi trailer trucks are different than passenger-to-passenger accidents because of the laws regulating this industry. The company that owns the truck, the owner of the freight the vehicle was carrying, and the driver’s employers may all be liable in these accidents.

There are several factors to take into account when adjudicating these lawsuits. Some operators may cut corners on safety. Speeding, especially going too fast for conditions, could be a factor. Some commercial drivers exceed the number of hours per day they can be on the road, or the truck driver may have been distracted. And equipment maintenance may play a role.
