Live it Up Super Greens Supplement Salmonella Outbreak
A multistate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium has been linked to the powdered supplement, Live it Up Super Greens. Since August 2025, 45 people in 21 states have been sickened, and 12 have been hospitalized. Sixty-two percent of all patients, who range in age from 16 to 81 years old, are male. About one quarter of the outbreak patients live in Wisconsin.
Health officials are using whole genome sequencing to identify cases included in this outbreak. This testing identifies the genetic “fingerprint” of the Salmonella bacteria cultured from each sick patient. Matching fingerprints indicate that patients were exposed to the same source of contamination.

Frequently Asked Questions
Many people don’t realize that supplements don’t require pre-market approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). That’s why the agency recommends people consult with their doctors before taking a supplement.
Energy drinks and supplements marketed as diet or sports aids fall into the “food” category of products regulated by the FDA. For the most part, food producers aren’t required to provide the FDA with evidence of a product’s safety before selling it. There is an exception for dietary supplements that contain an ingredient not currently in the food supply.
Food can become contaminated with bacteria through soil, air, water, processing equipment, and food handlers. Cronobacter and Salmonella are especially good at surviving in dry and low-moisture food-processing environments. In 2022, Cronobacter illnesses associated with powdered infant formula triggered massive recalls from various companies. Salmonella is a frequent offender when it comes to recalls for dried foods. One study estimated that Salmonella was responsible for 94 percent of recalls for dry or low-moisture foods in the U.S.
One reason Salmonella can withstand dry conditions is that within minutes of detecting a dry environment, Salmonella cells can modify their cell membranes to regulate moisture loss, according to a report from Virginia Cooperative Extension. This allows them to go into something akin to a dormant state until they arrive in a more hospitable.
Because Salmonella is a known risk in dry and low-moisture food processing facilities, manufacturers should recognize it as a hazard and implement preventative controls, according to the FDA draft guidance.
