Explosion at Sandman Hotel in Ft Worth Injures 21 [Update]

Updated January 17

A natural gas explosion at the Sandman Signature Fort Worth Hotel has injured 21 people. Four people were taken to area hospitals. Two hotel employees are among the injured. Maite Lopez, 27, suffered severe burn injuries and is receiving care at Parkland Hospital’s burn unit. Carmen Hermosillo was trapped under debris for hours with a broken leg and injuries to her back.

Emergency responders arrived at the hotel, inside the W.T. Waggoner Building on 8th Street between Houston and Throckmorton, around 3:45 p.m. on January 8. Eyewitnesses have told local media that there was a strong smell of gas before the explosion and a thunderous boom that shook the ground and shattered windows when the blast occurred.

Eric Hageman, who leads Pritzker Hageman’s Explosion Team, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that aging infrastructure and service work are common causes of gas explosions. An investigation is ongoing.
