ShopRite Ground Beef Salmonella Outbreak

Updated August 23 A multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to ground beef sold at ShopRite stores has ended after sickening 18 people in four states. The patients became ill on dates ranging from April 27, 2023, to July 6, 2023, seven of them were so sick they needed to be hospitalized. This outbreak likely included more illnesses that were unreported, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“The hospitalization rate for this outbreak is about twice the average,” said noted Food Safety Attorney Eric Hageman, Managing Partner of Pritzker Hageman which recently won a landmark $6.5 million verdict for a client sickened by chicken contaminated with Salmonella.

The patients in this outbreak range in age from less than one year old to 97 years old, about 20 percent of them are under five years old. Health officials have interviewed 16 of the patients. Nine of them said they ate ground beef they purchased at ShopRite before they became ill. Of those, seven people said they purchased 80% lean ground beef products.

Symptoms of a Salmonella Infection

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection, which include nausea, fever, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea that can be bloody, usually develop within six to 72 hours of exposure. Health officials say the outbreak strain of Salmonella Saintpaul does not show resistance to antibiotics.

2022 Shoprite Salmonella Ground Beef

In July 2022, a ShopRite in Greenwich, NJ issued a Salmonella recall for ground beef. The recall included store-made packages of ground beef, meatloaf mix, and ground pork. It is not known if the supplier for that recalled ground beef is the same company that supplied the beef for this outbreak.
