Listeria Recall for Italian-Style Meats Sold at Walmart, Meijer… [Updated]

Updated March 8 with more store information. Salami and other Italian-style meats sold under multiple brand names at Walmart, Sam’s Club, Meijer, Publix, Target, Whole Foods, and other stores are part of a 34-ton Listeria recall by Daniele International of Mapleville, RI. Consumers who have purchased these products should not eat them as Listeria can cause serious illness and death. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage or stillbirth.

On March 6, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS) released a list of stores that sold the products. Organized by state, the list is 317 pages long, listing each store location. It includes 49 states and the District of Columbia. Alaska is omitted. The stores affected in each state are:

Products Included in the Recall

The problem was discovered during a routine inspection by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The recall includes salami, soppressata, capocollo (capicola), and prosciutto produced from May 23, 2022, through November 25, 2022, and shipped to retail stores nationwide through January 17, 2023. The 69,255 pounds of recalled products include:

  • FREDERIK’S by Meijer SPANISH STYLE charcuterie sampler tray, 6-oz. plastic tray with sell-by date 4/15/23.
  • Boar’s Head CHARCUTERIE TRIO, 6-oz. plastic tray with sell-by dates 4/13/23, 4/14/23, and 4/15/23.
  • COLAMECO’S PRIMO NATURALE GENOA UNCURED SALAMI, 7-oz. plastic tray with sell-by date 12/23/23.
  • COLAMECO’S PRIMO NATURALE BLACK PEPPER UNCURED SALAMI, 7-oz. plastic tray with use-by dates 12/22/23, 12/30/23, and 1/17/24.
  • DEL DUCA SOPRESSATA, COPPA & GENOA SALAMI, 1-lb. plastic tray with sell-by dates 4/13/23 and 4/14/23. 
  • DEL DUCA CALABRESE, PROSCIUTTO & COPPA, 1-lb. plastic tray with sell-by date 5/6/23.
  • DEL DUCA GENOA SALAMI, UNCURED PEPPERONI & HARD SALAMI 1-lb. plastic tray with use by date 5/4/23.
  • Gourmet Selection SOPRESSATA, CAPOCOLLO, HARD SALAME 12-oz. plastic tray with sell-by date 4/14/23.

Previous Recall, Outbreak

In 2010, Italian-style meats produced by Daniele International were linked to a Salmonella outbreak that sickened 245 people in 44 states. In connection with that outbreak, the company recalled over 1,400,000 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) varieties of salami/salame products that were sold at Costco, Fred Meyer, Fry’s Food and Drug, Haggen, Hilander, Kroger, Market Basket, Quality Food Center – Fresh Fare, Ralphs – Ralphs Fresh Fair, Sams Clubs, Scotts, Smiths – Smiths Marketplace, Stop and Shop, Top Food, Waldbaums, Walmart, Weis.

Listeria Symptoms

Symptoms of a Listeria infection often appear within a day of exposure but can sometimes take as long as 70 days to develop. They include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, other muscle stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
