The Beach Haven Inn, located next to the Atlantic Ocean, sustained damage from Tropical Storm Ian in September. At the time of the accident, the forklift driver was transporting roofing materials through the parking lot for storm repair. A Daytona Beach Shores Public Safety Department spokesperson told WOFL-TV that the driver claimed he was unable to see Brock because he was looking through “a small space between the two loads.” When a bystander tried to tell the driver to stop, he backed up instead.
Susan Brock’s grandson Shawn told WKMG-TV that he still has unanswered questions about the accident: “How did she not move out of the way of it? Did she not hear it? Did she try to move out of the way?”
Neighbors are shocked and saddened by the accident. Brock was described as someone “who gave the shirt off her back.” Another neighbor told WESH-TV that Brock was planning to marry her fiancé next month, who she had been with for over 20 years.
