Humans Get Salmonella From Handling Dog Gone Dog Treats

At least three people in Massachusetts have developed Salmonella infections after handling Dog Gone Dog Treats, according to the state health department. Made in Georgetown, Dog Gone Dog Treats, including “chicken chips” and beef liver and sweet potato chips, are dehydrated products and are not fully cooked.

Production has temporarily been halted and stores have been ordered to remove any existing product from their shelves. They were sold at:

  • Essex County Co-Op in Topsfield
  • New England Dog Biscuit Company in Salem
  • Gimme Chews & Moore in Haverhill
  • Animal Krackers in Gloucester

The patients, all residents of Essex County, include two adults in their 70s and a child. Health officials found the outbreak strain in an open bag from a customer and several unopened bags.

People can get Salmonella infections from handling contaminated pet food and then eating, smoking, or touching their mouths. They can also spread the germs on their hands to surfaces, food, and other people.

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. These symptoms usually set in with six to 72 hours of exposure.

Dogs with Salmonella infections don’t always show symptoms. When they do, they may seem lethargic, experience diarrhea that contains blood or mucus, have a fever, or vomit.

This is not the first time Salmonella illnesses in humans have been linked to pet food. In one recent outbreak, pet foods made from raw turkey were part of a Salmonella outbreak linked to a number of turkey products including Jennie-O ground turkey.

In that outbreak, the Salmonella lawyers at Pritzker Hageman represented several clients including a 5-year-old girl who developed a painful bone infection called osteomyelitis as a complication of her Salmonella infection.
