Two Injured in Washington, IA House Explosion

Two people in Washington, Iowa were hospitalized after they were injured in a house explosion on January 4. An investigation to determine the cause of the blast, on the 1100 block of Washington Street, is underway.

The force of the explosion blew out windows of homes a block away. Neighbors said they woke to their houses shaking around 4 a.m. and saw the flames coming from the home. They rushed to help, along with two staff members from the United Presbyterian nursing home who were able to pull one of the victims to safety.

The victims were transported to Washington County Hospital and then transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital. Washington Fire Chief Brendan DeLong did not have an update on their condition.
