Federal health officials have linked the source of the outbreak to onions imported from Mexico and distributed to restaurants and grocery stores including Target and Walmart between July 1, 2021 and August 27, 2021.

The onion Salmonella recall includes the Target store on McKinney SW. Walmart locations that sold the recalled red, yellow and white onions include:  Bulreson, Colleyville, N. Cockrell Hill Rd, in Dallas, Coit Rd in Dallas, Denison, Farmers Branch, Frisco, Fort Worth, Lawrence St. in Gainesville, W. Buckingham Rd. in Garland, Greenville, Henderson, Keller, E. Round Grove Rd. in Lewisville, Gilmer Rd in Longview, N. Highway 67 in Midlothian, Plano, Roanoke, Sherman, and S. Broadway Ave. in Tyler.

The recalled onions were also distributed to restaurants. Many of the people sickened in this outbreak ate restaurant food containing onions before they became ill. During interviews with health officials, some mentioned eating at Mexican-style restaurants before they developed Salmonella infections.
