La Mex Salmonella Outbreak May Be Part of a Multistate Outbreak

A Salmonella outbreak at La Mex restaurant in Morris, IL may be part of a multistate outbreak, according to the Grundy County Health Department. Health officials there are urging anyone who ate at the restaurant between August 31, 2021, and September 7, 2021, and became ill to see a doctor and get tested. It’s important to do this even if initial symptoms have resolved, they said, because Salmonella infections can have long-term complications.

Gundy County health officials say the likely source of the outbreak, which has sickened at least eight people, is food provided by a supplier and not operating errors at the restaurant. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have joined the investigation. La Mex, located at 155 E. Jackson St. in Morris, has temporarily closed during the investigation of the outbreak.

Last week, a Salmonella outbreak was reported at El Sombrero in Fox River Grove, IL, about a 1 hour 45 minute-drive north of Morris. The  McHenry County Department of Health said that the outbreak included customers who ate at the restaurant between August 23 and September 3. It is not yet known if the two outbreaks are related.

Salmonella Symptoms

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection, which usually develop within six to 72 hours of exposure, include fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea that can be bloody. Salmonella is transmitted via the fecal-oral route, meaning that people get Salmonella infections when they eat food or drink beverages that are contaminated with microscopic amounts of animal or human fecal matter. This can happen if an infected food handler does not wash hands properly after using the bathroom, if produce makes contact with contaminated water, soil, or surfaces while it is being grown, processed, or prepared; or if animal waste contacts food products during slaughter.
