Six people are dead and nine are hospitalized after a liquid nitrogen leak at Prime Pak Foods in Hall County, GA this morning. When first responders arrived at the scene at 2076 Memorial Park Road, they found a large number of employees who had evacuated the building, some of them experiencing respiratory distress and other medical emergencies, Hall County Fire Department Division Chief Zach Brackett said at a press conference.
Five people were confirmed dead at the scene, another died after being transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Alejandra Vera confirmed to 11alive.com that her husband Edgar Vera of Gainesville was one of the employees who died.
Three people who were admitted to the critical care unit at Northeast Georgia Medical Center are in critical condition and five people who received initial treatment in the emergency room are in fair condition. The condition of another person who was en route to the hospital at the time of the news briefing is unknown.
Four of the people who were transported to the hospital were firefighters.
Prime Pak Foods, which produces poultry products for foodservice and retail clients, merged with Victory Processing to form Foundation Food Group last year. Some of the products produced at the facility are quick-frozen. Fire officials say a liquid nitrogen line ruptured this morning causing the leak. They have not yet determined what caused the rupture.
