Man Dies in Iowa City House Fire

A 72-year-old man died in an Iowa City house fire on Sunday morning. Firefighters responding to a 1:40 a.m. call about a fire at 1516 Rochester Ave. found the house surrounded in smoke. Thomson, who was found inside, was pronounced dead at the scene.

One other person who was in the house escaped safely.

Fire crews battled through thick smoke before finding and extinguishing flames in the basement. They have not yet determined the source of the fire.

Heating sources such as furnaces and fireplaces are common sources of house fires, accounting for about 16 percent of all reported home fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Between 2009-2013, about 56,000 house fires were associated with heating equipment. Those fires resulted in 1,490 injuries and 470 deaths. About half of home heating fires occur in December, January and February.
