Smiling Hara Tempeh of Asheville, North Carolina is voluntarily recalling 12-ounce packages of unpasteurized soybean tempeh because of possible contamination with Salmonella. Samples of the tempeh tested positive for Salmonella, and further testing found that it was Salmonella paratyphi B with a PFGE that matched the outbreak strain that has sickened people in North Carolina, New York, South Carolina and Tennessee. All of the people sickened were in Buncombe County/Asheville prior to onset of illness and presumably ate the tempeh at a restaurant, food cart or deli in Asheville.
The company is recalling tempeh manufactured this year between Jan. 11 and April 11. The containers are marked with a best-by date of 7/11/12 through 10/25/12. Retailers for Smiling Hara tempeh, according to the company’s website, include the following, most of them restaurants:
