Updated July 22, 2026 3:30PM Propane grill fires can cause catastrophic burn injuries when a defective propane tank, cylinder valve, regulator, hose, connector, ignition system, or other grill component allows gas to leak or ignite unexpectedly. A burn injury lawsuit investigation can determine what failed and whether a manufacturer, distributor, retailer, propane exchange company, or service provider may be legally responsible.
A recent fire in Little Canada, Minnesota is a reminder of how quickly grill fire incidents can escalate. CBS Minnesota reported that on March 25, 2026, a propane tank caught fire while Leo Martinez was grilling on his deck, and the fire spread from the deck to his home. Martinez suffered severe burn injuries. Incidents like this illustrate how rapidly a grill fire can cause devastating harm and why investigating the cause early matters.
At Pritzker Hageman, our burn injury lawyers investigate defective propane tanks, valves, regulators, hoses, and grills for burn survivors and families nationwide. Our legal team is dedicated to holding negligent manufacturers accountable and ensuring survivors receive the justice they deserve.
Were You Injured in a Propane Fire?
Can I Sue After a Propane Grill Fire?
Someone who suffered severe burns in a propane grill fire may have a product liability claim if a defective tank, valve, regulator, hose, connector, ignition system, or grill caused or contributed to the fire. A claim may also involve negligent filling, inspection, installation, repair, or servicing. The available claims depend on what failed, who handled the product, and the law that applies.
A recall can be important evidence, but a product does not have to be recalled for a manufacturer or another company to be held responsible. An early independent legal investigation can help identify the responsible companies and preserve evidence before the grill or propane cylinder is discarded, exchanged, altered, or repaired.
Common Causes of Propane Grill Fires
Propane grill fires often start with a defective part in the tank, the regulator, a hose, valve, connector, or the ignition system. When those parts are not properly designed, manufactured, or tested, propane can escape or ignite during normal use.
Here are the most common types of defects our lawyers investigate:
- Faulty pressure regulators and gas pressure failures. The regulator controls how much propane flows from the tank to the burners. When a regulator is defective or damaged, it can let too much gas through, too little gas through, or allow gas to escape where it shouldn’t. If propane builds up inside or around the grill before it ignites, the result can be a violent flare-up that causes serious burns.
- Leaking hoses, connectors, and fuel lines. These parts carry gas from the tank to the burners. If they are cracked, brittle, loose, or poorly manufactured, propane can leak during grilling near the person operating the grill. You may smell gas before ignition, or you may have no warning at all before a flash fire.
- Defective propane tanks, valves, and Overfill Prevention Devices (OPDs). A propane tank is supposed to store fuel safely under pressure. When the tank, valve assembly, or OPD is defective, propane can escape during storage, transport, or use. This creates an immediate fire hazard, especially when the grill is being lit or has just been shut off.
- Ignition failures and gas accumulation. The ignition system is supposed to light the gas safely. When it fails, propane can keep flowing even though the grill has not lit. Gas builds up in the firebox or under the lid. When ignition finally happens, the trapped gas can cause a fireball or explosive flare-up, causing catastrophic burn injuries.
Has Your Propane Grill or Gas System Been Recalled?
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled propane cylinders, grills, and gas-system components because they could leak gas, remain unintentionally on, or otherwise create a fire hazard. A recall can help identify a known defect, but the absence of a recall does not rule out a dangerous product failure.
- DuraTrac Stainless Steel Gas Connectors – Recalled March 26, 2026. CPSC says a manufacturing defect could cause a gas leak and fire hazard. The recall covers about 196,800 connectors marked with CSA file number 259973 and date codes 24D, 25A, 25B, or 25C.
- Worthington Enterprises EVAS 20 lb. Propane Exchange Tanks – Recalled February 22, 2024. The cylinders could leak gas. The recall covers about 146,160 cylinders with model EVAS-M0859, a serial number beginning with W, and a date code of 06-23 or 07-23. A cylinder may have an AmeriGas label or a later exchange company label.
- Traeger Flat Top Propane Grills – Recalled December 14, 2023. Incorrectly labeled control knobs could leave the grill unintentionally on. The recall covers about 37,000 grills with SKU 1DFL42LLA. At the time of the recall, Traeger had received 57 reports of incorrectly labeled knobs and no reports of fires or injuries.
If a recalled or defective propane product was involved, preserve the model, serial number, date code, labels, and the product itself when authorities say it is safe to do so. A propane explosion lawyer can investigate whether the tank, valve, regulator, hose, grill, or another component failed and which companies may be responsible.
Who May Be Liable for a Propane Grill Fire?
Liability after a propane grill fire depends on what failed, how the fire started, and whether a dangerous product defect, negligent servicing, or another preventable problem contributed to the incident. Multiple companies may share responsibility. Potentially liable parties may include:
- Propane tank manufacturers. If the tank, valve assembly, or a built-in safety component like the Overfill Prevention Device was defectively designed or manufactured. Investigators often look closely at valve defects, sealing problems, and structural weaknesses that could have allowed gas to escape.
- Grill manufacturers. If the grill itself was defectively designed, defectively assembled, or sold without adequate warnings or instructions. This includes problems with the burner assembly, ignition system, gas routing, or control knobs that allow propane to escape or ignite unpredictably. A grill manufacturer may also face scrutiny if the product had a history of similar failures, complaints, or recalls and the company failed to act quickly enough to protect consumers.
- Component manufacturers (regulators, hoses, valves, and connectors). If one of the smaller gas-system components was defectively designed, made from substandard materials, improperly assembled, or unable to withstand normal outdoor use. Many propane grill fires involve a failure in these parts rather than the grill body itself.
- Retailers, distributors, and propane service companies. If they distributed an unsafe product, sold recalled equipment, failed to remove a dangerous item from inventory, or passed along inadequate warnings. Propane refill, exchange, or service companies may also be liable if they provided a damaged tank, failed to identify a defect, improperly filled a cylinder, or returned unsafe containers to circulation.
How Evidence Supports a Propane Grill Fire Lawsuit
Evidence from the grill, propane cylinder, and fire scene helps investigators determine how the fire started and whether a defective product, propane leak, improper assembly, inadequate warning, or maintenance failure contributed to burn injuries.
Engineers and fire investigators examine the cylinder valve, regulator, hose, connectors, burners, ignition system, and other components for signs of failure. Product labels, serial numbers, date codes, purchase records, and service records also help identify the companies involved in manufacturing, distributing, selling, filling, installing, or servicing the equipment.
A burn injury lawyer can use this evidence to:
- Identify the component that failed and explain how the failure caused or contributed to the fire.
- Determine which manufacturers, retailers, propane suppliers, installers, service companies, or other parties bear legal responsibility.
- Connect the grill, cylinder, or component to a recall, known safety problem, prior incident, or production history.
- Respond to claims that the fire resulted from misuse rather than a product or equipment failure.
- Document the burns, medical treatment, lost income, scarring, disability, and other damages included in a burn injury lawsuit.
Evidence relevant to a propane grill fire lawsuit may include:
- The grill, propane cylinder, regulator, hose, valves, connectors, burners, ignition components, and other damaged parts.
- Photos and video of the scene, grill, cylinder, connections, labels, fire damage, debris, and surrounding area.
- Purchase receipts, propane exchange or refill records, retailer-account history, manuals, packaging, assembly instructions, warranties, and service records.
- The manufacturer, model number, serial number, SKU, date code, cylinder markings, and warning labels.
- Witness information, security-camera footage, doorbell-camera footage, cellphone video, and 911 recordings.
- Fire department, fire marshal, insurance, and incident reports, along with communications involving the manufacturer, retailer, propane company, installer, landlord, or service provider.
- Medical records, bills, wage-loss documentation, and dated photographs showing burns, surgeries, rehabilitation, scarring, and recovery.
