Salmonella Outbreak at Aladdin Mediterranean Café in San Diego [Update]

Updated with additional illnesses and hospitalizations. A Salmonella outbreak at Aladdin Mediterranean Café in the Clairemont area of San Diego has likely sickened at least 89 people, according to local news reports. Nine people who dined at the restaurant, located at 5420 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard in San Diego, have been hospitalized.

Patients, who range in age from 1 to 90, became ill after eating meals prepared at the restaurant between April 25 and May 1, 2025. A specific food source hasn’t been identified yet. The restaurant voluntarily closed on May 1st while the health department investigates. Health inspectors conducted environmental inspections on April 29 and May 2, 2025. While no violations were found during the May 2 inspection, the April 29 inspection noted a major violation related to food safety protocols and a minor violation concerning food holding temperatures.

Symptoms of a Salmonella Infection

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection usually develop six to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. They include fever, diarrhea that is sometimes bloody, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Sometimes the infection can get into the bloodstream, producing a more severe illness that requires hospitalization.
