Minnesota is grappling with a Salmonella outbreak linked to pistachio cream and a Salmonella recall for pecans. Nuts and butters or spreads made from them are frequently linked to food poisoning recalls and outbreaks. Here’s what’s happening in Minnesota.
Pistachio Cream Salmonella Outbreak, Recall
Three Minnesota residents are part of a Salmonella Oranienburg outbreak linked to contaminated pistachio cream. Another person in New Jersey was also sickened.
The outbreak patients, who range in age from 16 to 54, said they first noticed symptoms of illness on dates ranging from March 10, 2025, to May 19, 2025. One of them became so sick, hospitalization was required.
The Minnesota patients developed Salmonella infections after eating items containing pistachio cream at the same restaurant. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture collected the pistachio cream from the restaurant and tested it. Whole genome sequencing tests performed on the Salmonella cultured from the pistachio cream showed it has the same genetic fingerprint as the strain cultured from the patients.
Recalls for Emek brand pistachio cream and pistachio cacao cream sold at World Market stores were issued in July.

Pecan Salmonella Recall
On July 10, Navarro Pecan Holdings of Corsicana, TX, issued a recall for shelled pecans sold in packages of various sizes. On August 1, this recall was upgraded to a Class 1 recall, meaning the products pose a health risk. The recalled pecans, sold in pieces and halves, were distributed to stores in Texas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arkansas and New Jersey. Outside the U.S., the nuts were sold in the UAE, the Netherlands, and Italy.
Symptoms of a Salmonella Infection
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection usually develop within six to 72 hours of eating contaminated food. They include:
- Fever
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea that may be bloody
