Federal officials have identified pasta made by Nate’s Fine Foods of Roseville, CA as the source of a 15-state Listeria outbreak that includes 20 illnesses, 19 hospitalizations, 4 deaths, and 1 fetal loss. Whole genome sequencing tests have confirmed that the Listeria found in pasta made by Nate’s is the same strain cultured from outbreak patients.

Listeria Symptoms and Diagnosis
Listeriosis is caused by infection from the Listeria bacteria. Food facilities must pay particular attention to preventing Listeria from contaminating their products because, unlike many other types of bacteria, Listeria grows best in refrigerated conditions.
Symptoms can appear within 24 hours but may take up to 10 weeks (70 days) after consumption of contaminated food to occur. Symptoms include:
- Severe headache
- High fever
- Stiff neck
- Other muscle stiffness
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Pregnancy risks include miscarriage or stillbirth, even with mild symptoms.
Diagnosis usually involves blood or CSF culture; ask your provider to note any ready-to-eat meal exposures.
