A Salmonella outbreak has been linked to Malichita brand cantaloupe imported from Mexico. The melons were sold whole under the Malichita and Rudy brand names and cut under other brand names at stores including Walmart, Kroger, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, ALDI, and Kwik Trip.
Illnesses have been reported in the U.S. and Canada. Recalls for whole and cut melon have been issued.

Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak
Between October 17 and November 14, 2023, 117 people from 34 states became ill, and 61 were hospitalized. Since the outbreak began, at least two people have died from Salmonella Sundsvall infections they contracted from eating these contaminated cantaloupes. The patients range in age from 1 to 100 years old.
At least 14 people in this outbreak are long-term care residents whose facilities served the contaminated melon. And at least seven children ate the melon at childcare centers.
The number of cases reported from each state is: Alaska (1), Arkansas (1), Arizona (7), California (1), Colorado (3), Georgia (3), Iowa (5), Illinois (6), Indiana (2), Kansas (1), Kentucky (5), Massachusetts (1), Maryland (1), Michigan (1), Minnesota (14), Missouri (9), Mississippi (1), North Carolina (2), Nebraska (4), New Jersey (3), Nevada (2), New York (2), Ohio (8), Oklahoma (2), Oregon (2), Pennsylvania (1), Rhode Island (1), South Carolina (3), Tennessee (4), Texas (5), Utah (3), Virginia (2), Washington (1), and Wisconsin (10).
In Canada, 63 illnesses, 17 hospitalizations, and 1 death have been reported. This outbreak is linked to two strains of Salmonella – Sundvsall and Oranienburg. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency found these strains in Malichita brand cantaloupes.
Symptoms of Salmonella Infection
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection usually develop within six to 72 hours of exposure. They include nausea, fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea that can be bloody.
