Salami Recall – Fratelli Beretta Antipasto Trays Are a Salmonella Risk

After the CDC identified Fratelli Beretta antipasto trays as the source of a Salmonella outbreak, the Mount Olive, NJ company issued a recall. The recalled 24-oz. trays containing two 12-oz packages with sliced salami, prosciutto, soppressata, and coppa were sold nationwide at Costco and elsewhere. UPDATE September 2, 2021- This 431-ton recall was not large enough according to an August 31, 2021, public health action from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warning consumers not to eat any Fratelli Berretta antipasto trays with “best by” dates through February 11, 2022, not just the one under recall.

These products may be contaminated with Salmonella Infantis and/or Salmonella Typhimurium. Consumers who have purchased these products should not eat them as Salmonella can cause serious illness. Thirty-six people in 17 states have been sickened in this outbreak. Twelve people have been hospitalized.

The number of illnesses reported from each state is:  Arizona (5), California (7), Colorado (1), Illinois (4), Indiana (1) Maryland (1), Michigan (2), Minnesota (2), Nevada (1), New York (1), Ohio (3), Oregon (1), Texas (2), Utah (1), Virginia (1), Washington (2) and Wisconsin (1).

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include fever, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. These symptoms usually develop within six to 72 hours of eating contaminated food.

The recall includes approximately 862,000 pounds of uncured antipasto products produced by Fratelli Beretta from February 28, 2021, to August 15, 2021. They have “best by” dates of AUG 27 21 through FEB 11 22 and the  UPC code 073541305316. The establishment number “EST. 7543B” appears inside the USDA mark of inspection.
