FDA Finds Listeria at Felix Custom Smoking, Issues Public Health Alert

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a public health alert for Felix brand smoked salmon, smoked tuna, and salmon jerky products that are potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.  During an inspection that began July 19, 2021, and is ongoing, the FDA found Listeria at Felix’s facility in Monroe, Washington, and requested that the company issue a recall. Felix declined.

Eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious illness and death. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth. Because of these life-threatening risks, it is illegal to sell ready-to-eat foods that are contaminated with Listeria.

Symptoms of a Listeria infection, called listeriosis, include high fever, stiff neck, other muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, and loss of balance. These symptoms usually develop within two weeks of eating contaminated food but can take as long as 70 days to appear. Treatment of listeriosis often requires hospitalization, about 20 percent of cases are fatal.

What Felix Custom Smoking Products are Affected?

During its inspection of Felix Custom Smoking in Monroe, WA, the FDA collected environmental samples from 104 direct food contact surfaces and adjacent areas. Test results showed that 19 of these samples were positive for Listeria monocytogenes, five of which were from direct food contact surfaces.

After being notified of these findings, the company declined to issue a recall and has continued to process seafood. So, the FDA has issued a public health alert for products that Felix produces including ready-to-eat salmon, squid jerky, and frozen, hot-smoked, and cold-smoked seafood.

Specific products include:

  • Felix Northwest Blend Smoked Wild King Salmon
  • Felix Northwest Blend Smoked Wild Sockeye Salmon
  • Felix Northwest Blend Smoked Wild Tuna
  • Felix Pepper Smoked Wild Mixed Salmon Jerky
  • Felix Wild Keta Teriyaki Smoked Salmon Jerky
