Updated August 19, 2026. A house explosion in Corydon, Kentucky, started a fire that destroyed a home and killed the person inside on March 13, 2021. A gas leak had been reported at the residence earlier that week, but investigators had not determined what caused the explosion in the public reports we located.
Firefighters responded to the 8200 block of Pritchett-Crooks Road shortly before 11 a.m. and found the home engulfed in flames. A detached garage and nearby grass were also burning. Susan Givens, who was inside the home, died.
According to 14 News, Corydon Volunteer Fire Chief Bryan Coghill said shortly after the explosion that a gas-department investigator was at the scene because of the earlier gas leak. He emphasized, however, that the cause remained under investigation.

Who Can Be Liable for a Gas House Explosion?
Liability depends on what the investigation finds. In a gas explosion case, potentially responsible parties can include a natural gas utility, propane supplier, plumber, HVAC contractor, appliance installer, maintenance company, property owner, or manufacturer of defective equipment.
The presence of natural gas does not automatically make any one company responsible. An experienced gas explosion lawyer can investigate where the gas came from, what failed, who was responsible for that part of the system, and whether negligence or a defective product contributed to the explosion.
Another Kentucky House Explosion Is Under Investigation
In August 2026, a house explosion in Central City, Kentucky, critically burned the homeowner and damaged four neighboring homes. The Kentucky State Fire Marshal’s Office and ATF are investigating that explosion, and no cause had been publicly announced as of August 19.
