Symptoms of a Listeria infection usually devlop within two weeks of exposure but can take as long as 70 days to develop. These symptoms include a headache, stiff neck, muscle aches, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Sometimes these symptoms are preceded by an upset stomach, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
