Wood Ear Mushroom Salmonella Outbreak Ends With 55 Sick

A Salmonella outbreak linked to dried wood ear Mushrooms has ended with 55 people sickened and six hospitalizations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  These mushrooms, distributed by Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc., were sold only to restaurants. On September 23, 2020, the company issued a recall for the mushrooms sometimes called kikurage, dried black fungus, dried fungus, or mu’er/mu er/mu-err.

This 12 -state outbreak, announced in September, includes people who range in age from 2 to 74 years old. These patients reported the onset of symptoms on dates ranging from January 21, 2020, to September 19, 2020. Many of them reported eating ramen at the same restaurants. The names of those establishments were not released.
