The explosion occurred around 10 p.m. on E. Highland Boulevard near Rigsby Avenue. Witnesses said it could be heard blocks away. The fire that followed the blast raged through a duplex and house.

Pedro Gonzalez and his father were two of the neighbors who ran to save the man. Gonzalez told News4SA:

“The fire was uncontrollable,” he said. “The heat was in my face. the smoke was in my eyes. The smoke was in my lungs. I didn’t go in further because the fire was burning out of control. When we got the guy out, he was burned from head to toe.”
