Propane House Explosion Injures 2 in Kentucky

A house explosion caused by a propane leak injured a mother and daughter in Grayson County, KY on Wednesday. First responders arrived at the scene on 129 Crawford Street in Millwood shortly before 6:30 P.M. Angela Young (41) and her 7-year-old daughter Johanna were injured in the explosion. They were flown to the burn unit at UofL Hospital in Louisville.

Young suffered burns on 80% of her body and will be in a medically-induced coma for several weeks. Her daughter was treated for burns to her back and is back home with her grandparents. Young’s son, A.J. Scanlon (15), said that his mom shielded his sister from the blast. He told WDRB News that “It’s a mix of emotions of worry, anger and confusion.”

According to the State Fire Marshall, the explosion was caused by a malfunction in the home’s propane furnace. The malfunction caused a gas leak, which ignited the blast. The home’s propane tank was refilled earlier that afternoon and a technician reported smelling gas after filling the tank. Young’s father, Bremis Hudson (who also owns the property), said that they had the propane and furnace shut off after smelling gas. He said that he warned his daughter not to stay in the home in the event of a gas leak. Young and her daughter were in the process of leaving the home as the explosion happened.
