Pelican Island Tank Farm Explosion Injures 2 in Texas

Two people were injured in an explosion at the Pelican Island Storage Terminal on Pelican Island, Texas yesterday. The crude-oil storage facility on GTI Boulevard is located near the Texas A&M University at Galveston campus on the north side of the Galveston ship channel. The university issued a shelter-in-place order that was lifted around 4:30 p.m.

Crews were welding near a tank that holds two million gallons of heavy crude when the tank exploded and fire enveloped the area. Firefighters used foam cannons to suppress the flames.

Since July 2013, Texas A&M University at Galveston has filed 13 air quality complaints against the facility with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, according to the Galveston County Daily News. The most recent complaint was filed in September 2019.

The Pelican Island Storage Terminal is owned by World Point Terminals, based in St. Louis.
