A new multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to onions has led to the recall of red, white and yellow onions distributed by Prosource Produce and Keeley family Farms to restaurants, grocery stores (including Walmart) and meal preparation companies (e.g. Hello Fresh) across the United States. 2020 Onion Salmonella Recall

An onion recall linked to a Salmonella outbreak includes Walmart, ALDI, Kroger, Food Lion, Giant, Costco, Publix, Giant Eagle, New Market, Stop & Shop and other grocery stores. Consumers who have recently purchased onions or products containing them such as sandwiches, kabobs, salads, wraps and salsas from these stores should check recall information carefully.

Thomson International Inc. of Bakersfield, CA issued a recall for red, yellow, sweet yellow and white onions after federal health officials traced the source of a multistate Salmonella outbreak to them. More than 640 people in the U.S. and Canada have been sickened, eighty-five people have been hospitalized.

The onions were distributed to grocery stores, restaurants and foodservice companies that prepare foods for nursing homes and other settings.  So far, major grocery store chains affected by the recall include: ALDI, Costco, Food Lion, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Giant, Giant Eagle, Kroger, New Market, Publix, Ralph’s Smiths, Stop & Shop, Trader Joe’s and Walmart.

ALDI Onion Salmonella RecalI

In partnership with Onions 52, ALDI has issued a recall for red, yellow and white onions from select stores and removed all remaining recalled onions from those stores. Consumers who have recent;y purchased onions at stores or through Instacart should check recall information carefully.

The states with affected stores are: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Affected products include:

  • 2-pound bags of sweet onions with UPC 033383602912
  • 2-pound bags of red onions with UPC 033383601014
  • 2-pound bags of white onions with UPC 033383600512
  • 3-pound bags of yellow onions with UPC 033383600024

Costco Onion Salmonella Recall

Costco is contacting customers who recently purchased onions to let them know that they are part of a recall linked to a Salmonella outbreak. The company has also added onion recall information to its website. The recalled onions were:

  • 10-pound bags of Hartley’s Best Jumbo Yellow Onions sold at Costco stores in California, Colorado and Utah from May 1, 2020 to August 2, 2020.
  • 25-pound bags of Hartley’s Best Jumbo Red Onions, sold at Costco stores in Utah, Colorado and Texas between June 1, 2020 and August 1, 2020.
  • 8-pound bags of Hartley’s Best Jumbo Red Onions sold at Costco stores between June 1, 2020 and August 1, 2020 at California Bay Area locations and select Nevada locations, or between June 5, 2020 and July 31, 2020 at Northwest locations in Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Idaho.
  • Spinach Salad or Cobb Salad that could have contained the affected Jumbo Red Onions sold between July 29, 2020 and August 1, 2020 in Alaksa locations: NE Anchorage, Issaquah, Woodinville, or Fairbanks.
  • 8-pound bags of Hartley’s Best Jumbo White Onions sold between July 9, 2020, and August 1, 2020 in Texas, Louisiana or Oklahoma.

Food Lion Onion Salmonella Recall

The recall includes:

  • jumbo red onions sold in 3 -pound bags from May 24 – July 31
  • jumbo white onions sold in 3 -pound bags from May 24 – Aug 1
  • jumbo yellow onions sold in 3 -pound bags from May 24 – Aug 1
  • sliced red onions sold from May 24 – July 31
  • stirfry vegetables sold from May 24 – July 31

Fred Meyer Onion Salmonella Recall

The recall includes onions sold May 11, 2020 – August 3, 2020:

  • 2-pound bags red onions
  • 25-pound bags jumbo red onions
  • 3-pound bags Kroger brand yellow onions
  • 5-pound bags yellow onions
  • 50-pound bags small yellow onions
  • 2-pound bags Kroger brand white onions
  • 25-pound bags medium white onions

Fry’s Onion Salmonella Recall

The recall includes onions sold May 11, 2020 – August 3, 2020:

  • 2-pound bags of red onions
  • 5-pound bags of medium sweet onions
  • 40-pound bags of jumbo yellow Vidalia onions
  • 25-pound jumbo red onions bulk

Giant Onion Salmonella Recall

The recall includes Lancaster red onion products:

  • 30-oz Lancaster kabob kit
  • 24-oz SB corn cob kabob
  • 21-oz SB grilled veg with mshrm kabob
  • 14-oz SB stir fry blend
  • 17-oz SB WH mshrm kabob
  • 8-oz store brand diced red onions

Giant Eagle/Market District Onion Salmonella Recall

The recall includes onions and products containing them. Onions that are part of this recall were sold at Giant Eagle and Market District stores since June 6, 2020. They include:

  • Bulk and bagged Spanish onions with PC/PLU/NC 4093
  • Bulk and bagged white onions with PC/PLU/NC 4663
  • Bulk and bagged red onions with PC/PLU/NC 3286 and 4082

The recall also includes 80 prepared foods and deli products sold at Giant Eagle and Market District Stores. These products include: chicken salad, potato pancakes, pierogies, macaroni salad, stuffed pork chops, stuffed turkey breast, pizza, cucumber salads, paninis, hoagies, spinach dips, sub sandwiches, hero sandwiches, California cob salads, tuna salad, Greek salad, feta salad, BLTs, grilled vegetables and more. Customers who have purchased these products since July 25, 2020 should check the company’s website for detailed product information.

Kroger Onion Salmonella Recall

The recall includes onions and products containing onions.

The following onions are part of the recall. They were sold May 11, 2020 – August 3, 2020:

  • 5-pound bags yellow onions

  • Taylor Farms Chicken Salad Croissant, 6.15 -oz.

  • Pico de Gallo 80- oz.
  • Cheddar Cheese & Chicken Snack Tray, 5.95-oz.
  • Rotini Pasta Salad, 10-oz.
  • Macaroni Salad, 10-oz.

Publix Onion Salmonella Recall

The onion recall affects stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Stores in Florida are not affected.

  • Red onions packaged by Del Monte Fresh Produce sold in bulk with the PLU number 4082.

Ralph’s Onion Salmonella Recall

Progressive Produce LLC issued a Salmonella recall for red and yellow onions supplied by Thomson International, Inc. and sold at Ralph’s. The recalled onions were sold loose in bulk bins. The red onions have a PLU sticker with the brand name Pacific Gold, no other Progressive Produce products are impacted by this recall.

  • 5-pound bags of medium sweet onions

The recall includes Lancaster red onion products:

Trader Joe’s Onion Salmonella Recall

Progressive Produce LLC issued a Salmonella recall for red and yellow onions sold at Trader Joe’s. The recalled onions were supplied by Thomson International, Inc. They were sold loose in bulk bins. The red onions have a PLU sticker with the brand name Pacific Gold, no other Progressive Produce products are impacted by this recall.

 

Walmart Onion Salmonella Recall

Red onions, white onions, yellow onions and sweet yellow onions are being recalled from about 1,500 Walmart stores in 26 states are affected by the recall, according to information posted on the company’s website.

States with affected Walmart stores include: Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Symptoms of a Salmonella Infection

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection, which include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever, and usually develop between six and 72 hours of exposure. The people sickened in this outbreak, who range in age from less than 1 to 102 years old, reported the onset of symptoms on dates ranging from June 19 to August 11, 2020.
