The tenant who reported smelling gas told Janesville Fire Battalion Chief Ron Bomkamp that the odor had been coming from the area in the basement near the water heater for several days, according to NBC15.com. The explosion occurred after a tenant went down to the basement and lit a cigarette.

A fire that followed the blast had fully engulfed the house, located in the 800 block of Hawthorne Ave., by the time firefighters arrived to the scene around 9:15 p.m.

Both victims are being treated at Mercy Hospital.
