Illinois Cyclospora Salad Outbreak Hits Hy-Vee, ALDI, Jewel-Osco Shoppers

Illinois has been hard hit by a Cyclospora outbreak linked to bagged salads sold at ALDI, Hy-Vee , Walmart, Giant Eagle, ShopRight and Jewel-Osco stores. Thirty people in Illinois are now part of a eight-state outbreak that includes 509 people, twenty four of whom have been hospitalized.

The bagged garden salads, produced by Fresh Express, contain iceberg lettuce, carrots and red cabbage and were distributed to 31 states and Washington D.C. All six of the grocery store companies have issued recalls for the salads, as has the salad producer, Fresh Express .

The food safety lawyers at Pritzker Hageman are representing clients from Illinois sickened in this outbreak just as they represented clients in the Cyclospora outbreak linked to Fresh Express salads sold at McDonald’s restaurants in 2018 and in every other major Cyclospora outbreak in the U.S.

“As we have before, we will hold Fresh Express accountable for manufacturing and selling unsafe food,” said Cyclospora Lawyer Raymond Trueblood-Konz.

Cyclospora is a parasite. Infections occur when people eat food contaminated with microscopic amounts of human feces. This can happen through direct contact or through contact with contaminated water. Symptoms of an infection can last for weeks or months if untreated. They include explosive diarrhea that is sometimes watery, muscle aches, abdominal cramps, vomiting, fever and other flu-like symptoms.

The people sickened in this outbreak, who range in age from 16 to 92 years old, reported the onset of Cyclospora symptoms after eating ALDI Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salad, Hy-Vee Brand Garden Salad, or Jewel-Osco Signature Farms Garden Salad in the week before they became ill. If you ate this salad and developed these symptoms, contact your doctor.

So far, the number of cases reported from each state is: Illinois (30), Iowa (54), Kansas (1), Minnesota (13), Missouri (7) Nebraska (8), and Wisconsin (9).
