Ellinger, TX House Explosion Injures 2, Propane Leak Suspected

A couple in their 70s was severely injured in a house explosion on Grover St. in Ellinger, TX yesterday. Michael and Mazie Hess were airlifted to Dell Seton Medical Center in Austin for treatment. According to a Facebook post by a member of the couple’s church community, Michael sustained internal injuries and burns to 50 percent of his body; Mazie suffered internal injuries and burns to 70 percent of her body.

The blast occurred around 6:40 a.m. The sound, which could be heard three miles away, shook nearby homes. Neighbors said the blast instantly reduced the home to rubble and there were flames everywhere. Joe Lamer told KVUE that he rushed to help the couple, found Michael and helped get him to safety.

Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Randy Noviskie told KVUE that propane is a suspected source of the explosion as there is no natural gas in that area of town,
