Car Crash Near Lake Mille Lacs Kills One, Another Seriously Injured

A car crash near Lake Mille Lacs killed one woman and left another seriously injured on Thursday, July 2. The crash happened shortly before 1:00 PM on the southern shore of the lake in South Harbor Township, MN. Joanne Koenig (78) of Onamia was turning from southbound Highway 169 to eastbound Highway 27 when her car was hit by a pick-up truck heading north on Highway 169. Koenig, along with her passenger Joan Vivan (82), also of Onamia, was transported to North Memorial Hospital. Vivan died in the hospital three hours later. Koenig is in critical condition. The driver of the pick-up that hit their car, Jeffrey Baldenow (53) of Elk River, was not injured.
