Car Crash Deaths Rise in Minnesota Despite Sharp Drop in Traffic

The number of fatal car crashes in the Twin Cities has increased despite a significant drop in traffic. State officials say traffic has decreased by 50% since March 16th, when non-essential businesses in Minneapolis and St. Paul closed to the public.

According to data from the Office of Traffic Safety, there have been 24 fatal car crashes in the Twin Cities since March 16th, which have accounted for 28 deaths. This is two times the number of fatal car crashes in Minnesota at this time last year. Out of the 28 deaths, half of them were speed-related or caused by careless and negligent driving. “Reduced traffic on Minnesota roads does not give drivers a license to speed or drive aggressively,” says the Office of Traffic Safety.
