Berlin, CT House Explosion – Neighbors Rescue Veteran on Memorial Day

A gas leak is the suspected source of a Memorial Day house explosion in Berlin, CT that trapped an 83-year-old Marine Corps veteran in the flaming wreckage until neighbors rushed in to save him and his dog. The man sustained severe burns and was transported to Bridgeport Hospital’s burn unit.

Neighbors told local media that they smelled gas the night before the blast. Crews from Connecticut Natural Gas were on scene as emergency responders sought to bring the blaze under control. Fire officials have not yet released an official cause for the explosion.

The blast occurred around 11 a.m. on Memorial Day. It took neighbors several tries before they found a way to make it inside.
