Tow Truck Driver Seriously Injured in Semi Crash At Mitchell Interchange

A semi crash seriously injured a tow truck driver who was providing roadside assistance at the Mitchell Interchange in August. The crash happened on Monday, August 26th at about 11:15 AM near Milwaukee, WI. The tow truck driver, Joe Altenhofen (56), was in the process of loading a car from a different crash onto his truck’s flatbed. A semi-trailer truck lost control on the wet roads and crashed into Altenhofen’s tow truck, trapping him in the cab. The impact of the crash caused the semi-truck to flip onto its side, blocking all three lanes of traffic. Altenhofen was taken to the hospital for serious injuries, including a broken leg, two broken ribs, and other injuries. The semi driver, Ali Abubakar, received two citations for driving too fast for conditions and failure to keep a vehicle under control.

Friends and co-workers of Altenhofen hosted a car show and fundraiser in his honor on Sunday. The industry hopes to raise awareness about Wisconsin’s “Move Over” law, which requires drivers to shift lanes or slow down in order to provide a “safety zone” for stopped law enforcement, emergency, and maintenance vehicles.
