A Salmonella outbreak linked to Outpost Natural Foods of Milwaukee has sickened four people in Wisconsin, according to the state health department. Health officials have suspended meat and food processing at the natural foods cooperative located at 2826 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. due to insanitary conditions.
Health officials discovered the insanitary conditions during a routine inspection of the facility. Samples of some ready-to-eat products also tested positive for Salmonella. Four people who ate at an Outpost location between March 20, 2019, and May 6, 2019, developed infections from that the same Salmonella serotype.

What is Salmonella?
Food gets contaminated with Salmonella when it makes contact with fecal matter. This can happen during growing if contaminated water or fertilizer is used, during slaughter or if an infected food handler does not wash hands properly after using the bathroom.
Symptoms of an infection include fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. These usually set in between six and 72 hours of exposure and last about a week.
