Creamworks Creamery Milk Linked to Yersinia Outbreak in PA

Milk from Creamworks Creamery milk in Waymart, Wayne County, PA has been linked to a Yersinia outbreak that has sickened 17 people. The farm has voluntarily stopped selling the milk while health officials investigate the outbreak.

Yersinia milk outbreakYersinia is a bacteria that causes foodborne illness symptoms including nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Usually, they appear four to six days after exposure but can take as short as 24 hours or up to two weeks. Sometimes a Yersinia infection can mimic the symptoms of appendicitis including fever and a dull ache in the lower right abdomen.

Creamworks is licensed by the state of Pennsylvania to pasteurize milk on-site. After it is bottled, the milk is distributed to grocery stores, restaurants, and other customers and sold on-site from a farm stand.

State health officials urge anyone who drank the milk and developed symptoms to see a doctor and mention exposure to Yersinia so proper testing can be performed.
