4 Dead in Colorado After Fiery Crash of 24 Cars and 4 Semis on I -70

At least four people are dead after a fiery crash on I-70 in Colorado yesterday involving 24 cars and four semi trucks. And at least six people were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries.

The crash, which occurred near the Denver suburb Lakewood, occurred just before 5 p.m. when a truck driver lost control and slammed into a group of cars stopped in traffic. As cars and trucks collided, a diesel spill fueled an inferno that burned as hot as 2,500˚ F, melting aluminum and potentially compromising the structural integrity of the overpass, a police department spokesman told NPR.

Parts of I-70 will remain closed through Saturday while authorities assess pavement conditions.
