A Salmonella outbreak likely linked to English cucumbers sold at Costo has sickened six people in Washington, according to the Washington State Department of Health. Cucumbers are also the likely source of an outbreak in Canada that has sickened 45 people.
Washington Cucumber Salmonella Outbreak
Five Washington counties reported illnesses. King, Snohomish, Thurston, and Pierce counties reported one illness each. Yakima County reported two. All six case-patients were infected with the same strain of Salmonella bacteria. The most recently confirmed case was reported on September 15, 2018.
During interviews with health officials, case-patients reported eating English cucumbers they had purchased from various Costco stores in Washington between August 18, 2018 and September 10, 2018. The cucumbers linked to the illnesses were sold in three-packs of individually wrapped cucumbers.
Canadian Salmonella Outbreak
Health officials in Canada are still gathering information about potential sources of the Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 45 people. But, many of the case-patients reported eating cucumbers before they became ill.
The illnesses were reported from mid-June 2018 and late-September 2018. Most of the illnesses occurred in British Columbia where 37 illnesses have been reported. Five people in Alberta are part of the outbreak. Manitoba and Quebec have each reported one illness. Nine people have been hospitalized.
Symptoms of a Salmonella Infection
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea and fever. These symptoms usually develop between six and 72 hours after exposure to the contaminated food and last about a week. Children, seniors and people with compromised immune systems are at elevated risk of contracting a Salmonella infection.
