The explosion happened at about 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, near the intersection of Santa Fe and Fourth Avenue. A building, described by the Denver Fire Department as a four-plex, was leveled. A fire started, and as of later yesterday afternoon, Denver Fire Captain Greg Pixley said he could still “smell lingering pockets of natural gas.”

A natural gas leak is one possible cause of the explosion, according to Captain Pixley. The Denver Fire Department is working with Xcel Energy, the area gas company.
