Zavalla, TX Home Explosion Injures 2, Propane Leak Suspected

A house explosion in Zavalla, TX on January 17, 2017 seriously injured two people. Lyle and Elaine West were at their home, located at 279 Pleasure Drive, when something ignited a suspected propane leak setting off an explosion at about 6:15 a.m.

Elaine West, 83, was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Lufkin where she is listed in fair condition. Lyle West, 82, was airlifted to Parkland Hospital in Dallas where he is in critical condition.

Neighbors told first responders that they heard a loud explosion and people yelling and when they looked outside, there was a pile of rubble where the West’s house once stood.  They ran to help the couple and stayed with them until help arrived.

The force of the blast damaged neighboring homes and scattered debris in a 400-foot radius. Fire officials are working to pinpoint the source of the explosion.
