After Saving Baby, Young Mother Dies in Wyoming, IL House Fire

After saving her 12-day-old daughter, a 21-year-old mother died in a house fire in Wyoming, IL on January 30, 2017. Firefighters called to the scene at 900 N. Galena Ave. at 10:36 a.m. found the house fully engulfed in flames. They also found the tiny infant outside.

“The victim was a hero as she put her baby into a car seat and dropped the baby to the ground from the upstairs window,” Sheriff Steve Sloan said in a press release. The infant was transported by Stark County Ambulance to OSF St. Luke Medical Center in Kewanee and later transferred to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. She suffered only minor injuries.

Firefighters found Carter’s body in the upstairs bedroom. She was overcome by smoke inhalation after breaking the window and dropping her daughter to safety.

Officials have not yet determined the source of the fire. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help provide for Carter’s infant daughter. As of August 16, 2017, $43,391 has been raised. The last donation was a month ago. The comments on this page call this mother a hero. We agree.
