Semi Truck Causes Five Vehicle Crash

Highway Safety

A terrifying crash was caused by a semi truck tailgating a car.

The semi that was following a car too closely caused a five-vehicle accident on U.S. 20 in Laporte County. Six people were injured in the crash which happened at about 8:50 a.m. on March 8, 2016. The accident occurred at the driveway of the Renaissance Academy, a private school.

The driver of the semitrailer was hauling a steel coil. He rear-ended a Honda Odyssey car driven by a 44-year-old woman. Her car then rear-ended a blue Kia, driven by a 47-year-old woman, that was stopped to make a turn into the school parking lot, sending it into a white Lexus driven by a 31-year-old woman from Michigan City, Indiana. Her car was pushed into oncoming traffic and was struck by another semi truck.

Those injured include a 6-year-old and her mother. The 6-year-old was flown to a hospital in South Bend. Her mother was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Also injured were a 14-year-old who was in the Honda, and another 14-year-old who was in the Kia. The truck driver was cited for following too closely. He was not injured in the crash.

The citation may lead to fines, but this does not hold the driver accountable for the harm he caused.
