Propane Leak Suspected in Winnebago House Explosion

A propane leak is the suspected source of a house explosion in Winnebago, NE on Monday that severely injured one man.  Tony Pycha, 87, was taken to Mercy Medical Center and later airlifted to be treated at the burn unit of an Omaha hospital.

Family members told KCAU9 that his injuries include broken bones and second and third-degree burns on his arms and face.  He is in critical condition.

The explosion at the home on Highway 75, South of Winnebago, occurred Monday morning. When first responders arrived on the scene, the house had been blown to pieces, its debris scattered in a 200-foot radius. Mr Pycha, a farmer who had lived in the house for 65 years, was under a pile of rubble where his home once stood. Firefighters suspected a propane leak may have been the source of the explosion. Further investigation suggests that the explosion was caused by a propane heater malfunction.
