Man Killed in Semi Crash in Sumner County

A 27-year-old man was killed in an accident with a semi tractor trailer on February 15, 2016 in Sumner County. The accident occurred on U.S. 160 7 miles west of Wellington at 8:36 a.m. A 1997 International semi was westbound on U.S. 160 and stopped to make a left-hand turn south onto Mayfield Road. The semi was rear-ended by a 2015 Chevrolet pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi driver was not injured in the accident.

Federal law tightly regulates the trucking industry simply because these accidents can be so deadly. Semi truck drivers are held to higher standards than drivers of passenger cars and trucks, and must be specially trained and have a special driver’s license.

Many factors could have led to this accident. Conditions may have been poor, with reduced visibility or slippery roads. The truck may not have been equipped with proper lights or the load may have been larger than regulations allow. The driver may have been distracted or driving inattentively.
