Propane Explosion at Filling Station Caused by Ruptured Tank

Two men were seriously injured when a propane tank ruptured and exploded at a filling station in Marshfield, Massachusetts, about an hour south of Boston. One of the injured men was an employee of Williams Coal and Oil Company.

At the time of the blast, he was helping a customer fill his propane tank. That customer also sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center by Boston MedFlight.

The cause of the explosion appears to have been a rupture at the bottom of the customer’s propane tank. The tank flew over a highway and landed hundreds of feet away.

The propane tank was rusted on the bottom, according to news reports.

The Massachusetts State Fire Marshal is investigating and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) may get involved.
