Minivan Hits Bicycle Accident

The incident occurred a few minutes after 9:30 p.m. Sunday May 10, 2015. The driver of the vehicle was driving northbound when he switched lanes to make a pass he struck a man riding a biking on the side of the road. The man’s condition is unknown; we hope he makes a full recovery.

Accidents involving pedestrians, including those on bikes, increase substantially during the spring and summer when people are spending more time outdoors and often forgoing vehicular transportation. And while Minnesota boasts as being one of the most “bike friendly” states in the nation, accidents still occur.

The law classifies bicycles as vehicles, therefore bikes, and bikers, are governed by traditional motor vehicle laws. Under the law bikers are to ride on the street, not the sidewalk, and obey all traffic laws. Unfortunately, vehicle drivers are not always cautious of bikers on shared roads, which can result in catastrophic injury.
